Festus was a new business owner. He had decided to take the plunge and build a stable for the people of Clinstone.
Business was actually going much better than he had expected! It was more than paying the bills for him and his big family. He could finally feel proud of his life.
That was until he took business from John Hoover…
The guy was horrid!
He had been keeping his racehorses at Festus’ stables for six months and never paid him. Even though he knew John had the money! And when Festus tried to approach John about it he attacked him.
Despite John being one of his biggest customers, Festus had to discontinue allowing him to use his stables. Until he paid up, he was not welcome. Even then, Festus wasn’t sure he could forgive such terrible behaviour.
He did his best to be patient and gracious, but something about John made him feel unsettled. Not to mention, Alonzo had told him about asking John for help and he turned him away!
The poor guy was as down on his luck as a person could be. Festus did what he could to help Alonzo, but he needed to decide to help himself first.
The best he could do was give the guy work and offer advice where he could. Alonzo had so much potential if only he could see it!
But with his huge family, Festus could only help him so much. He still needed to put the needs of his family first.
He had to figure a way to get John to pay up the money he owed him. If he could get that money, he could give Alonzo a portion to help him back on his feet and still keep enough to put towards his family…
But how? John was unapproachable. And somehow, he had the whole town wrapped around his finger. No one believed Festus that John had treated him so poorly.
“John Hoover?” They would ask. “There is no way! He’s the sweetest man around!”
But Festus knew the truth, he saw John for who he was. Maybe it was high time someone dealt with him?
