Mary is quiet and often shy. Although she is quite beautiful, she never found her confidence.
She grew up in the city with her family, when her father had suddenly passed when she was fifteen. Her mother moved them up to Clinstone where her own family had relocated a few years previous.
Mary’s mother seemed happy here, but she had a slower adjustment to the western lifestyle. But she was finally finding her way after her mom had introduced her to her new friend, Elenor Crandell, who had a son, Timothy.
She and Timothy got along well, but it had never moved beyond friendship. One day, she was with Timothy when they ran into John.
She was seventeen at this point, and the moment she and John met she was drawn to him.
He was so confident, charismatic, and funny. She loved hearing about his wild life, running a ranch and racing horses. It didn’t take long for her to fall completely in love with John. So of course she had said yes when he proposed to her a few days shy of her eighteenth birthday!
How lucky was she to have a man of such calibre?!
Until recently, when she found out in Issue 14 that John was still seeing his ‘ex’ girlfriend, Juliette Donely! Mary was completely heartbroken when Sheriff Jenkins showed her the letter Juliette wrote John. But he clearly didn’t choose Juliette over her since he showed up and married her.
They were happily married for about a year though when John started to go to the saloon with Timothy and he wouldn’t come home until late in the night –sometimes not even until the next morning.
Mary was certain John wasn’t being faithful, but any time she tried to confront him about it he would become angry that she would dare accuse him of such things. One time he got so angry he slapped Mary.
But that wasn’t the only time he had hit her.
Mary was starting to realize that John wasn’t the man he claimed to be, but if she could wait it out and be a better wife then maybe he could be that man?
Now that she knows John was seeing Juliette while they were engaged, Mary wasn’t so sure her marriage was going to be salvageable. She consistently wondered if those late nights with Timothy were spent with just Timothy or if he was meeting other women.
Now that John was dead, would Mary ever get her answers?
